Global Maritime Security Report: 28 October

28 Oct, 2026

Welcome to the latest ATL Global Maritime Security Report, prepared with MS Risk. This week’s edition examines the continuing impact of conflict on commercial shipping, alongside persistent piracy and armed robbery threats across key trading routes.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a particular concern, with further projectile attacks on tankers, including an incident that left a vessel disabled. Mine risks, transit restrictions and interference with navigation systems continue to complicate passage through the region. In the Black Sea, the reported sinking of a commercial vessel following a drone attack off Romania, with loss of life and crewmembers missing, highlights the human cost of the conflict and the exposure of shipping beyond the immediate areas of hostilities.

Although no new incidents were reported this week in the Red Sea, off Somalia or in Southeast Asia, the report continues to assess these regions as presenting a high threat. A quieter reporting period should not be taken as evidence that the underlying risks have diminished. Careful voyage planning, effective watchkeeping and well-rehearsed emergency procedures remain essential to protecting vessels and crews.

For owners and operators, these developments reinforce the importance of reviewing security arrangements and insurance requirements as voyages and trading conditions change. At ATL, we work with clients to assess their exposures, review relevant cover and clarify notification requirements, helping them make informed decisions in a demanding operating environment.
