Madrid, 19 October 2026: ATL, an insurance and reinsurance broker specialising in the marine sector and complex risks, has appointed Javier Fernández as Managing Director and Head of its Spanish operations.
With 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, Javier Fernández has held senior leadership positions in Financial Lines and Executive Risks in both Madrid and London at firms including Aon, WTW and Asterra Partners. He brings an international perspective to the business, together with extensive expertise in Executive Risks, mergers and acquisitions, private equity and the transfer of risk to the insurance market.
Iñaki Brandes, CEO of ATL, said: “Our commitment to Spain represents another step forward in the evolution of our strategy. Javier brings deep market knowledge, an extensive professional network and a strong commitment to client service, fully aligned with our culture: that of a young, dynamic and independent firm owned by its own management and employees, combined with an international strength and depth of experience that few can match.”
Javier Fernández, Managing Director and Head of ATL Spain, added: “I am delighted to take on the responsibility of leading ATL in Spain, preserving our boutique approach and unwavering commitment to client service as we develop the business locally. I firmly believe we offer an ideal alternative to the larger international brokers, which can be less flexible, and to local operators with limited reach: we combine extensive expertise and international capabilities without losing the personal touch.”
Javier joins the business at a time of significant growth for ATL, which has recently launched an ambitious strategic plan aimed at maintaining its strength in the marine sector, replicating its proposition across new European markets and diversifying into additional lines of business.
A new chapter is beginning for ATL in Spain under Fernández’s leadership. He will be responsible for coordinating and strengthening the company’s national strategy around two clear objectives. First, to replicate ATL’s strength in marine insurance in Spain, building on its international position in Marine War, Cargo and Hull & Machinery. Second, to establish a strong boutique insurance business in Spain, giving end clients access to the most specialised international insurance markets.
To achieve this, ATL is currently in an active expansion phase, strengthening its team with senior specialist talent and broadening its offering across specialist lines including aquaculture, yachts, Property & Casualty, Executive Risks and Financial Lines (including transactional and tax risks), M&A and cyber insurance.
A key moment in ATL’s growth
Founded in 2014, the company is an accredited Lloyd’s broker, providing clients with access to one of the world’s leading underwriting platforms. ATL has deep expertise in marine insurance, a business that has gained further relevance against a geopolitical backdrop of conflict and uncertainty affecting global maritime trade.
Against this complex backdrop, the Group has grown significantly since 2022 and currently handles more than €160 million in gross written premium placed through the business.
ATL aims to reach €70 million in revenue by 2031. To achieve this, it plans to strengthen its core marine business by increasing market share, deepening relationships with existing partners and replicating its proposition across other segments and territories. At the same time, ATL is expanding into additional specialist lines to address broader adjacent markets, including Financial Lines, Executive Risks, cyber insurance, M&A, Protection & Indemnity and other specialist solutions, alongside the growth expected from its Spanish operations.
